Dr Christiana Atako, President, Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), says her administration will synergise with the government at all levels to further develop Nigeria’s economic roadmap.
Atako made the assertions at her investiture as the 24th President of the NIM on Wednesday in Lagos, saying the institute’s plan to work with the government was part of its contributions to national awakening.
She also unveiled a five-year strategic framework to promote continuity for successive leadership and boost the institute’s financial base.
The newly elected president of the institute hinged the framework on factors like capacity building and institutional strengthening for increased productivity, efficiency and effectiveness.
She said that these were available to the government bodies and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to improve their operations and enhance career development of the workforce.
Atako added that the institute would accord greater priority to the promotion of professional management knowledge and skills in private and public organisations through training, research, publications and dissemination of knowledge.
“This administration will focus on 3Rs: Re-engineering, Revitalising the NIM brand and Restoration.
“NIM, as a prime driver of management standards, values and professionalism, is at the fore-front of ensuring effectiveness and efficiency in providing services.
“This is not only to its members, but also to our stakeholder groups, which believe in our capacity to significantly influence the management structural base of Nigeria.
“On my watch, the institute will endeavour to work closely with as many other professional bodies in a bid to deepen the contributions of the industry to the economy and national growth,” she said.
Also, Dr Ije Jidenma, the President, Institute of Directors (IoD), emphasised the importance of character and values as an integral part of leadership success.
Jidenma said that character was fundamental to effective leadership, because good character built trust, without which, there would be no followers.
“In recent years, there have been endless news stories illustrating examples of unethical leadership, which has brought a renewed interest in understanding the factors that promote ethical business behaviours.
“We have seen so many great leaders ruin their opportunities because of moral failure and these vices have manifested in moral indiscretions, financial misappropriation and corrupt practices.
“In response, the most recent leadership theories have focussed on the character of individual business leaders and how this can influence an organisation’s activities at multiple levels.
“Effective leaders leverage their character strengths and create opportunities for others in their organisations to use their character strengths to work more effectively,” she said.
