Expert advocates proper dosage of herbs to avoid organ failures

By Itohan Abara-Laserian

Dr Jephter Akaehie, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, AfrOrganiks Nutrition Ltd., has said that proper use and dosage of herbal medicines was necessary to avoid kidney related health issues and organ failures.

Akaehie made the assertion at the company’s annual end of the Year Partners and Distributors retreat/Awards and product unveiling on Sunday in Lagos.

According to him, Africa has very potent herbs, suited for Africans but the only challenge with herbal medicine is improper dosage hence its negative effects on the human organs.

He also called for adequate clinical tests to be carried out on herbs to achieve optimal benefits from the herbal products.

“AfrOrganiks is a company that is focused on reinventing herbal products. So what I mean by that is that we subject plants to clinical studies and trials before production.

“We know that we have very potent herbs, but people do not know how to turn them into medicines that are well dosed.

“That is why herbal produce, most of the time, begin to cause kidney problems and organ failure in the body because they are not well dosed.

“They are good but because of poor clinical studies on them, so that they can understand how to use them,” he said.

Speaking on some of the bottlenecks local producers faced, Akaehie, noted that inflation and forex topped the list.

He said that as a result of the challenges, prices of the product fluctuate often, stating that while sourcing raw materials, specifically the capsules, were a huddle others were locally sourced.

He noted that the AfrOganiks has partnered the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for clinical testing of products.

Akaehie also explained that the company was working towards setting up a factory within Africa but not in Nigeria because of the challenges Nigerian products faced when exported to countries like the United States of America.

Speaking of partnerships, he said: “We have partners across six states in Africa and across Nigeria and our products have been recording positive results from the feedback we have received.”

AfrOrganiks originally began operations in 2002 with three products.

Six products; Freflo, Prostagen, Cynovit, Afroganics Wellness Tea, Afroganics Cleanser Bitters and Greenolax Capsules to fight health issues ranging from hormonal imbalance, infertility, prostrate disorder, falopian tube blockage among others were unveiled and rebranded.
