Airports Fire and Safety Multipurpose Cooperative inaugurates second of aviator’s lodge

LAGOS - The Airports Fire and Safety Multipurpose Cooperative Society (AFSMCS) on Tuesday inaugurated the second wing of its aviator’s lodge to increase revenue base and boost welfare of the cooperators.

The President of AFSMCS, Mr Saheed Sadiq, said at the inauguration in Lagos that it was another milestone achievement in line with the investment drive of the multipurpose cooperative system.

He said that the cooperators comprised staff of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, Nigeria Safety and Investigation Bureau, Murtala Muhammed Airport School and others.

According to Sadiq, the legacy project is a manifestation of the collaborative efforts of cooperators in the aviation industry.

He said that the group’s vision to diversify investment through shareholding in the hospitality business had yielded dividends with the bulk of the group’s trading surplus coming from the hospitality business.

“The derivable return on investment from the cooperative’s investments come back directly to the members who are the shareholders.

“By default, members who had exited the work system by virtue of statutory retirement still remain connected to these investments for life as shareholders.

According to him, the investments have contributed meaningfully to Nigeria’ Gross Domestic Product.

He added that the project began with groundbreaking ceremony on Dec. 12, 2022.

Sadiq said that the project, however, encountered delay and was not delivered in November 2023 as initially planned.

He praised the contractor, Strategic Shelter Development Company, for the ability to deliver the project on Oct. 14, 2024.

He stated that facilities in the lodge included a Dry Riser fire safety management system.

Sadiq said: “What we are commissioning today is the finished structure as delivered with electrical and other fittings including air conditioners fully installed in the respective accommodations.”

Sadiq commended members of the cooperative society for collective efforts in realising the project.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lodge is located at Ewututu, an airport community in Beesam.

Sadiq expressed confidence that the lodge would serve as a beacon of progress and hope for generations to come

It is a two-storey twin structure made up of four suites, 10 executive rooms, eight deluxe rooms and two staff rooms.
